Balancing the Stress of the Holidays and Demands of Work

Add news of tragedies here and around the world to the stress of meeting deadlines at home and work, and you and those around you may be more than ever on edge. This is a special and difficult time of year for many. Here are some simple ways you can uplift the lives of people who are frustrated, impatient and upset while balancing your own needs.

1. Be compassionate. If someone is having a bad day, a little empathy goes a long way. A silent pause and nod after an abrupt comment, or gentle touch of a loved one’s hand, speaks volumes before returning to your initial interchange. With a customer, a soft-spoken “I’d be frustrated too” after listening deeply to their story opens the door for them to hear you.

2. Breathe deeply while placing the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth for a minute or so. Breathe out more slowly than you breathe in as you listen. It helps calm your emotions and keeps you from speaking prematurely.

3. Ask yourself, “What do I need?” If you put everyone and everything ahead of the hot bath, good book or special time with friends or family, discounting your needs fuels impatience. When you are filled up, you have more to give and it is easier to be there for those who are struggling.

4. Do your best. Beating up on yourself does not prepare you to be compassionate to others. Self-approval does. That arises by balancing your needs with the needs of others.
